Gender Inequality
The women’s movement has been key to peace but sidelined in formal peace-building in Northern Ireland.

Women are at the forefront of community development, within and across communities in Northern Ireland, but continue to be underrepresented in peace-building and public life. This means that women are silenced and sidelined in public decision making; many also face barriers to participation in their own communities.
The women’s movement aims to change this, by giving women the skills, tools and confidence to engage in public spaces, and creating new opportunities for women to participate in public debate and policy making. As such, this pillar highlights the legacy of the impact of gender inequality and the conflict on women and girls and serves as a foundation to exploring feminism and women, peace and security.
