Women’s participation in conflict prevention and resolution must be valued, developed, and safeguarded.

Women play critical roles in preventing conflict and building peace in communities. In fact, a peace agreement, which includes women, is 35 per cent more likely to last at least 15 years. Marking 25+ years of the Belfast / Good Friday Agreement is a notable achievement and definitely in part thanks to the women’s activism in Northern Ireland.
The prevention pillar of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325) acknowledges that peace and security measures are only sustainable if women are equal partners in peace processes. It calls for women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in every stage of preventing conflict and building peace in their countries. Therefore UNSCR 1325 calls on governments to improve strategies to:
Develop women as leaders, activist and peacebuilders
Create a safe community for women to speak up
Protect women’s rights as leaders and peacebuilders
Support local women’s peace initiatives and conflict resolution processes
